Honour thy father and thy mother:
that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Exodus 20:12
Honor (verb): regard with great respect
Honor (noun): the quality of being honorable and having a good name
[antonyms – a state of shame or disgrace]
Honor your father and mother is to bring honor to one's household, honor to those who gave birth to you and/ or raised you
Honor is not seemly for a fool
Honor, esteem, praiseworthy, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise...
Philippians 4:8-9
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
Leviticus 19:32
Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the Lord.
Honor – to hold in great respect
- behave honorably toward your house / family
Shechem, the son of Hamor, behaved more honorably than those of his family before him (Genesis 34:18-19).
Saul, who was anointed to be the first king of Israel, at one point was honorable, but because of his disobedience to God, he brought dishonor on himself and his house.
Ponder the path of thy feet, look well to thy goings...
Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath
Honor is not seemly for a fool – the sacrifice of fools is to have a non-understanding heart – to go to the house of God in vain, not to hear with a heart that longs to know the ways of God.
They don't consider themselves to be doing any evil. Their ears are dull of hearing.
The fool does not consider the ways of God to be needful for them.
When a believer goes up to the house of God, they go up to offer praise with thankful hearts to the Lord – this is an offering that pleases the Lord.
The fool says in his heart there is no God – these are corrupt; they don't believe in God, don't know God, therefore to them they are offering up sacrifices in vain.
Mark 7:6-7
… This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Howbeit in vain do they worship me...
To honor with the lips, but not with the heart, does not bring honor to the Lord God.
Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart
Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before Me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from Me; for them that honour Me I will honour, and they that despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. - 1 Samuel 2:30
Ecclesiastes 5:1
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
