Taking the Name of the LORD...
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain. - Exodus 20:7

Therefore shall ye keep My commandments, and do them: I am the Lord. Neither shall ye profane My holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the Lord which hallow you, That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord.
- Leviticus 22:31-33
The Lord of Hosts is His Name
For thy Maker is thine Husband; the Lord of hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called. - Isaiah 54:5

For, lo, He that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is His thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The Lord, The God of hosts, is His name. - Amos 4:13

The Lord of hosts, the God of the whole earth, teaches His people who He is. In so doing, He also tells them how they are to regard His name - not vainly as if He were nothing more than a common thing, but with the highest regard and respect, having the full understanding that HE IS GOD OF HIS WORD. What He says, He will do. His name IS who He is.
Not long after the Lord taught His people these things by the word of His mouth, the time came where His people had to learn the lesson by experience as we can read from the scriptures found in Leviticus 24:10-16:
And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp; And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) And they put him in ward [separated him], that the mind of the Lord might be shewed them. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin. And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.
Notice these people did not lean on their own understanding, but they sought the Lord to see how the Lord wanted them to deal with the situation because sin cannot be ignored nor be taken lightly. The Lord gave a command, and He commands that it be obeyed. He alone is God. He is to be regarded much higher than the name of any human that is or is not in authority - such as a captain, a general or a king, or the name of a dear one that is deeply respected. God is the Creator of all, both in heaven above, on earth beneath and the waters that are under the earth. His name is not only to be respected, but also to be feared – for He is a Most Holy God, not one of many gods; He is the ONE and ONLY GOD.
Let all His creation praise the Lord, including Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children: Let them praise the name of the Lord: for His name alone is excellent; His glory is above the earth and heaven. - Psalm 148:11-13

Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The Lord of hosts is His name. - Isaiah 48:1-2
Let all those who call upon the name of the Lord, abstain from evil; those who are called by His name – that they do not put to shame the name of the LORD Most High. We must not make mention of the Lord's name, call ourselves part of the holy city, say we stand on the promises of God and not be doing so in truth and righteousness. You cannot believe that you will receive good things from God, if you are living in sin. Just because you declare the name of the Lord, does not mean you are living the righteous life God commands you to live - as the people of God ought to live, because when the name of the Lord is declared, it is so the glory of God will be made manifest through them.
If one's actions do not reflect the life of a true follower of God, one who abstains from sin, then they are in danger of taking the name of the Lord in vain, because the Light of Christ cannot be seen through them. Their vessel is still dirty, therefore opaque, as dirty, murky water that the sun cannot pass through to give light and life. They cannot give something they do not have, and they cannot “shew forth the high praises of God” if they don't show His praises by living in them as King and Lord of their life.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. - 1 Timothy 2:19
When one departs from iniquity, this brings honor and glory to the name of the Lord whose name is high above every name. This shows that it is the power of God working in them,

May the Lord's name be praised!
